Science Fiction has always been a fertile breeding ground for real scientific innovation, but I doubt anyone thought that the Transporter on Star Trek would ever be more than just a fantasy. It would seem however, that not only is matter teleportation possible... it has already been done!
Fox News reports that quantum information has been teleported between two separate atoms a meter a part. Yeah I have no idea what quantum information is either, but dammit, it sounds cool!
From the way the scientists involved talk about it, this sounds like it's more likely to lead to super fast, super computers which will take over the Earth and wipe out mankind, than it is to lead to instantaneous matter transportation devices. Still, this is one step closer to ending the monotony of endless traffic jams and miserable airline food and rocketing towards a world where your atoms can be scattered cross the universe instead.
