GFR has a presence at Comic Con and by all accounts, they are having a great time. Tons of great things are happening there but my favorite thing so far has to do with a sequel to one of GFR's favorite flicks, TRON. If you are a fan of Tron like we are, take a look at the video below:
Wow...just wow. If the general public can be half as excited as the nerds at Comic Con, we will have a great flick on our hands.

Let's be honest, Hancock is getting terrible reviews. However, I understand your need to have some Big Willie Style on the Fourth of July. Fear not. Fox Movie Channel is showing Independence Day all day long. That's right! You get to watch Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum, and Randy Quaid kick some tentacled ass on America's Birthday. HELL YEAH! Check your local listings for the channel but if you have Directv like me, I will be glued to channel 258 all day. As an added bonus, the movie is alternating with a 45 minute Making of Independence Day documentary.
Happy July 4th all you patriots!

Our good friends over at Cinema Blend have received an anonymous description about the next Star Trek trailer. If it turns out to be true, you better buy your Vulcan ears early. They will be in hot demand. Here's a small part of the trailer's description:
Paramount logo shows (newly updated) and pans up into the stars... Then an incredible (new?) musical score begins which sounds as if a little of Trek 2 and 3 scores were blended in. Switches to shots of stunning starfields. Closeups of the Enterprise hull while voice-over begins. Narration from older Spock: "The needs of the many... outweigh the needs of the few.." quick pause... Younger Spock: "Or the one" (Quintos line seemed so Leonard Nimoy sounding!)Switch to shot of Leonard Nimoy and Zachary Quinto standing together looking over a horizon at the Enterprise on Earth with an epic city in the background.
To read the entire trailer scoop, click here. I've never been a Star Trek geek. Not in the slightest. I haven't seen a Star Trek film in theatres since Star Trek 3 but I'm really excited about J.J. Abrams's reboot of the franchise.

Pixar is not just known for excellent films. They are also known for excellent cameos. I remember watching Monster's Inc. and spotting toy versions of Jessie the Cowgirl and Nemo, even before Nemo hit theatres! A friend showed me a Youtube video where people went back and scoured the old Pixar films to find some evidence of Wall-E. It appears that they have! Watch the video below and you be the judge.

Wall-E scraped together approximately $63 million in its opening weekend to take the number one spot at last weekend's box office. The $63 million made Wall-E the third highest opening weekend ever for a Pixar film just after The Incredibles and Finding Nemo. So far, Wall-E is garnering universal praise from the likes of Cinema Blend, Rolling Stone, an, hell, even the Wall Street Journal loved it. High praise indeed! With the five day long Independence Day weekend beginning today, expect Wall-E to take in an additional $60 million by Sunday evening.

I'm writing this story from the bedside of my wife after she gave birth to Audrey Kate last night at 11:06pm. In fact, she's cradled in my arms as I type this. Having 3 girls under the age of 9 got me to thinking. How do you raise them right? No, I'm not talking about saying no to drugs or keeping their virginity until they are 40. I'm talking about how to raise them on the right movies; specifically, sci-fi movies. Over the next few weeks, I'll be working on my latest story entitled "Must See Sci Fi! The Top 25 of the Past 25 Years." The 25 years rule disqualifies many movies such as Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, Planet of the Apes, Metropolis, and 2001: A Space Odyssey. I'm going to scour the past 25 years and list the must see science fiction classics since 1983 so that my three girls can understand and appreciate the great sci fi hits I have enjoyed over the past couple of decades.

George Carlin, known primarily for his stand-up routine about the 7 words you can't say on television, has died at age 71. Preliminary reports say he died of heart failure at 5:55 Sunday evening. Carlin was a counter-culture god, famous for championing free speech in his comedy routine. He also starred in numerous movies but GFR will always hold his role in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure close to heart. Carlin knew what he was talking about.

If you honestly thought a site called Giant Freakin Robots would discriminate against a little robot, you are dead wrong mister. We here at GFR embrace all freakin robots regardless of stature (although giant is usually cooler). With Wall-E, you have one of the most dynamic robots to hit the screen. He's a little small but he has personality. Personality goes along way.
GFR has several Wall-E clips to help you get ready for Friday's release. Don't worry though. You will see Wall-E put the bra on his head again. I know you were probably worried about missing it. Besides the 47,000th viewing of the bra, most of the footage is new or at least an extended clip of something we've seen briefly before. While you wait for Wall-E to hit theatres on June 27th, watch these clips, courtesy of our sister site Cinema Blend!

This story title doesn't even make sense does it? How can some craptacular movie like Speed Racer even begin to affect the amount of Wall-E Toys? At last week's Licensing International Expo, Andy Mooney, chairman of Disney Consumer Products, discussed how stores had to make a choice on what to stock and they mostly gambled on Speed Racer. I sometimes question the intelligence of idiot execs at Wal-Mart, Target, and the like. Who in their damn right mind would have thought Speed Racer would be a success? It looked like blue screen shit from the get go. These short sighted middle managers actually made the decision based on another Disney-Pixar film, Cars. While mediocre compared to other Pixar films, Cars has raked in the merchandising dough to a ridiculous amount. The merchandising bonanza is also the sole reason Cars 2 is in production before we get a sequel to The Incredibles if we ever do! more...

It's a safe bet to say if you are a reader of Giant Freakin Robot then you have watched Star Wars. George Lucas’s masterpiece was a pretty big part of my life just like the rest of you geeks. I watched all the movies and I wanted every toy they had although I never got the AT-AT Walker. Screw you, Santa. Anyways, my love of Star Wars never really went away. Of course, I kept it hidden from most people. My wife, Bethany, knew about it, but I made sure not to let her know how pathetic I was until after she was too far invested in me to run away.
Besides Star Wars, one of my other loves is Walt Disney World. When I heard about Star Wars Weekend 2008, I felt the little kid in me explode. Oh I had to go. Thankfully I have a sweet and understanding wife, and she was willing to go with me. The next thing I knew, we were off to Walt Disney World for June 6th through the 8th. Star Wars Weekends began in 1997 and has happened 9 times now. For each of the four weekends, Warwick Davis (aka Wicket) is the host at Disney’s Hollywood Studios for the Star Wars festivities. Also each weekend, a few Star Wars “celebrities” also appear for autographs and photos. Now, don't even think that you'll ever see Harrison Ford or Mark Hamill. We're talking small time celebrities. For our weekend, we had Jeremy Bulloch and Daniel Logan. Who?? Oh come on you have to know who Old Boba Fett and Young Boba Fett are! The other celebrities are: more...
