Do Yourself A Favor: Record But Don’t Watch Lost

lost Do Yourself A Favor: Record But Dont Watch LostI’ve been an avid Lost watcher since the first plane crash (I think I’ve counted at least 4 so far). I’ve stayed tuned in through the ups and downs. The frustrating finales, the endless third season full of questions which we all knew deep down that they had no intention of ever answering. A few months ago though, midway through season 5 I made a decision: Enough. I finally jumped ship. I still remember the Lost moment which did it. Sun receives a phone call, and rather than just tell us who’s on the other end Lost plays it’s trademark “whaaa?” music and flashes to something else, deliberately obscuring the identity of the person on the other end, and leaving us wondering for nearly sixty minutes just who the heck it is. When that question was finally answered, it turned out not be a question worth answering. The person on the other end was the Lost equivalent of Sun’s drycleaner. There was no mystery, Lost had, as it so often does, simply created drama and tension around nothing. Lost had once again jerked me around and I finally said forget it.

But nobody ever really leaves the island. A couple of weeks ago the season ended and the verdict from my friends was that the finale, which I’d boycotted since I’d missed all of the last half of the season and was now out of the loop, was fantastic. Still I resisted, until this weekend, when Lost sucked me back in.

This weekend I watched Lost the way it’s always been meant to be watched. All at once, in heavy doses, as if there were a cable protruding from my brain and pouring polar bear filled episodes directly into my cerebral cortex. In one day I knocked out ten episodes, back to back to back. It’s the way Lost must be watched. Suddenly all the annoying mystery phone calls to Sun’s drycleaner no longer mattered. Those silly attempts to create mystery out of nothing become mere footnotes when you’re watching it all at once, with one episode flowing into the next and connecting right into one another. They try to duplicate the effect of watching the entire series as one long endeavor, with those little “previously on Lost” montages before each episode… but it just doesn’t cut it. read this entry »

Doctor Who’s New Companion Revealed!

gillan1 Doctor Whos New Companion Revealed! When Doctor Who returns to the airwaves this season it’ll arrive not only with a brand new Doctor (the youngest actor ever to play the part… Matt Smith is only 26), but with a new companion too. The good news? She’s pretty and she can’t possibly be any more annoying than Donna Noble.

The BBC announced today that Scottish Actress Karen Gillan will be the new addition to the Tardis. She’s 21-years-old and unless you’ve followed her modeling career, she’s a complete unknown to anyone who’s not already a Doctor Who fan.

On the other hand, if your Doctor Who appetite is as voracious as mine then you saw her last season on Doctor Who in the episode “The Fires of Pompeii”, where she played a Soothsayer. No the Soothsayer isn’t hopping on board the Tardis. Gillan will likely play a new character in the Doctor Who universe.

2 Minute Torchwood: Children Of The Earth Trailer

torch 2 Minute Torchwood: Children Of The Earth TrailerBBC America has launched its phase one. What the hell does that mean? A brand new, 2 minute trailer for their upcoming Torchwood miniseries, Torchwood: Children of the Earth.

You’ve probably seen the very, very brief teasers playing on BBC America, but this trailer is our first in depth look at what it’s going to be about, beyond creepy children staring into the camera. The threat? The world’s children seemed to have been possessed by hostile aliens… or maybe M. Night Shyamalan. Also included in the trailer are all the usual, fantastic Torchwood staples including at least one shot of our man Jack making out with a dude. It just wouldn’t be Torchwood without that. Alien Getting The Remake/Prequel Treatment

13 Alien Getting The Remake/Prequel TreatmentSomething disturbing is hatching over at Fox, something even worse than a facehugger. Just when you thought it couldn’t possibly get any worse for the Alien franchise after the disaster that was the Alien Vs. Predators, Fox goes and does this. Bloody-Disgusting says they’re working on rebooting the franchise with either a total remake of the awesome, perfect, original Ridley Scott movie or they’re going to do some sort of origin story prequel.

Here’s how they describe it:

…the plan is to stick with the original concept of only one alien on the ship.

Michael Costigan, Ridley Scott and even Tony Scott are all on board to produce and have tapped Carl Rinsch to get beyond the camera and bring a new Ripley to the big screen.

Who is Carl Rinsch? I’m being told he’s a commercial/music video director and does work for Scott Free Productions, who is also producing the remake.

Final Pandorum Trailer

The last trailer for the upcoming Dennis Quaid/Ben Foster sci-fi thriller Pandorum is here. They’re really pushing the horror angle in this one, though it still seems to fit comfortably into that well-worn Solaris genre of strange and scary things happen in space. We get it. It’s weird out there. Here’s the trailer:

Terminator Salvation Review: Really? That’s Skynet’s Plan?

terminator Terminator Salvation Review: Really? Thats Skynets Plan?Terminator Salvation is an entertaining film, as long as you don’t think about it. The special effects are splashy the action is fast-paced and fun. Even the characters are, with the exception of Bale’s somewhat blank John Connor, interesting and well acted. Anton Yelchin in particular, who you may have noticed a couple of weeks ago as Chekov in Star Trek, really shines here as Kyle Reese. In fact, forget John Connor. They should have given us an entire movie focused on him. No the movie’s problems have nothing to do with anything that happened on set during the film’s making, they’re much deeper and more ingrained than that. It’s the script. It’s the entire premise on which the film is built that’s at fault and there’s really nothing the movie’s one-named director McG, even if he’d been allowed to deliver the R-rated movie this franchise deserved, could have done to fix that.

Since it’s the premise that’s the problem, there’s really no way to discuss this without minor spoilers. If you haven’t seen the movie and you don’t want it ruined for you, jump ship now. If you’re still here, then let’s get right to the heart of this problem.

Flight Of The Navigator Getting The Remake Treatment

12 Flight Of The Navigator Getting The Remake TreatmentThe unthinkable has happened. Disney is remaking Flight of the Navigator, a seminal, untouchable film for anyone who was a kid in the 80s. After the limp, lame mess they made of Witch Mountain earlier this year, there’s no reason to believe they’ll do anything other than utterly destroy all our happy memories of Navigator with the reboot.

Here’s how THR describes the remake effort:

Brad Copeland is writing the remake, which is being produced by Mandeville partners David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman. John Hyde, who executive produced the first one, steps into the same role for the new version.

Halo 28 Weeks Later

We’re never going to get our Halo movie so we’ll all have to make do with what ifs. For instance, what if Master Chief starred in the zombie movie 28 Weeks Later? That’s the question answered by this genius fan video:

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles Is Terminated

term Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles Is TerminatedIt’s all over for Terminator: the Sarah Connor Chronicles. There had been some speculation amongst fans that Fox might be willing to renew the robot stompin sci-fi show for another season, but today the network announced it’s fall 2009 prime time lineup, and Sarah Connor isn’t on it.

Instead, Fox is going for anti-geek programming involving cheesy sitcoms and a new series named Brothers.

While Terminator’s ratings slipped steadily over two seasons, this season’s finale had fans re-energized and ready for more. But while the series may be over, at least there’s a new Terminator movie franchise to capture fan’s attention. Lena Headey will be missed, but Moon Bloodgood is ready to step in as the latest in Terminator movie babes when Terminator Salvation debuts this weekend.

Star Trek Wins A Moral Victory At The Box Office

trekbox Star Trek Wins A Moral Victory At The Box OfficeGoing into the weekend, there was speculation that Trek might actually have the warp power to beat out the newly debuting Angels & Demons to hold onto the top box office spot for a second weekend, becoming the first Trek to do so since First Contact. The results are in, and it didn’t happen.

Angels & Demons, sequel to The Da Vinci Code, debuted with a $48 million opening weekend. Star Trek was a close second, with $43 million and lost only 42% of its audience for last weekend.

Even though it missed repeating at number one, Star Trek’s numbers are still quite an accomplishment. Most summer blockbusters lose at least 50% of their audience in their second weekend. Trek beat the numbers and came extremely close to beating out a newer film in Angels. Moral victory goes to Star Trek and sci-fi nerds everywhere.

In the process of winning that moral victory, Trek has already become the biggest grossing Star Trek movie of all time. The previous Trek champ was Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home which earned $109 million domestically. Add in this weekend’s totals and this new Trek has already earned an impressive $147 million.
